Only those registered may legally use the title “kinesiologist” and deliver regulated services such as movement analysis, exercise prescription, and wellness programming

COKO is the regulatory body overseeing entry-to-practice, professional standards, continuing competence, and public protection. Registration involves:
- Holding a recognized degree (4-year kinesiology or related program).
- Passing the COKO entry-to-practice exam.
- Paying registration fees and meeting practice standards
COKO Core Competencies Summary
COKO divides competencies into six domains, each representing a core area of practice. These domains serve as the foundation for registration, entry-to-practice exams, and professional standards.
1. Professionalism and Ethics
- Understands and applies ethical principles, legal obligations, and professional responsibilities.
- Maintains client confidentiality and informed consent.
- Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and cultural sensitivity.
- Upholds COKO’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
2. Communication and Collaboration
- Communicates effectively with clients, caregivers, and other health professionals.
- Adapts communication style to meet client needs (e.g., language, literacy, cultural context).
- Builds rapport and trust with clients.
- Works effectively in interprofessional teams.
3. Assessment and Evaluation
- Conducts thorough client assessments, including history taking, physical evaluations, and functional testing.
- Selects and applies appropriate assessment tools (e.g., gait analysis, posture, ergonomics).
- Identifies risk factors and red flags that require referral or further investigation.
- Interprets assessment findings to form evidence-based conclusions.
4. Intervention and Implementation
- Develops and implements personalized treatment plans based on client goals and assessment findings.
- Applies evidence-based interventions such as therapeutic exercise, injury prevention, and ergonomic modification.
- Monitors client progress and adjusts plans accordingly.
- Promotes client independence and self-management.
5. Practice Management
- Demonstrates effective time management, documentation, and record-keeping.
- Complies with regulations on advertising, billing, and conflict of interest.
- Ensures safe and clean work environments.
- Applies principles of risk management and quality assurance.
6. Professional Development and Continuing Competence
- Engages in lifelong learning and self-reflection to maintain and improve competence.
- Seeks feedback and incorporates it into practice.
- Keeps current with changes in legislation, research, and best practices.
- Participates in quality assurance activities and meets COKO’s continuing education requirements.
